Dr. Yuna Seong
Therapist / Neuropsychological Assessor / Coach
Dr. Ki Eun (Kay) Shin is a licensed clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at Long Island University, Post. She specializes in the evidence-based treatment of anxiety, depression, and suicidality, with advanced training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and neuropsychological assessment. Dr. Shin provides services in both English and Korean and brings a culturally sensitive, inclusive approach to her work with clients of all backgrounds.
Dr. Shin works with individuals across the lifespan—including children, adolescents, adults, and older adults—supporting them through life transitions, emotional challenges, and mental health conditions. Her clinical training includes a predoctoral internship at SUNY Upstate Medical University, extensive CBT and DBT practicums at Penn State’s Psychological Clinic and Anxiety Clinic, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Teachers College, Columbia University. She has also received formal training in neuropsychological testing and psychodynamic therapy, allowing her to provide comprehensive psychological evaluations and integrative, person-centered care.
In her clinical work, Dr. Shin has developed a special interest in supporting parents through the complex emotional and psychological challenges of raising children in today’s world. She works with caregivers to enhance emotional attunement, strengthen parent-child relationships, and promote effective, developmentally informed strategies for managing behavioral concerns and emotional dysregulation. Her approach is tailored to address the unique needs of multicultural families, including Asian and immigrant parents navigating intergenerational stress and bicultural identity.
In addition to psychotherapy, Dr. Shin offers executive functioning coaching to clients navigating challenges with attention, organization, and academic or occupational demands. She also provides sports/performance psychology services, working with athletes and/or high achievers on performance enhancement, mental resilience, and focus under pressure.
As a clinical scientist, Dr. Shin conducts research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), investigating emotional and cognitive risk factors for suicide and internalizing disorders using mobile-based, real-time methods. Her scholarship has earned national recognition, including early career awards from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America and the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. At LIU Post, she teaches and supervises doctoral students in CBT, multicultural care, and suicide prevention, and leads several diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the program.
Dr. Shin is passionate about empowering individuals and families through evidence-based, culturally attuned care—and about guiding the next generation of clinicians toward excellence and equity in mental health practice.
